I want to buy less then 5 cars a month. I own an auto body repair shop. I was told i need a dealers license but when I looked into it, the secretary of states office told me that i had to actually have a dealer in order to buy cars at an auction. I dont want to open a dealer, i just want to buy a couple of cars a month to keep my employees busy during slow times. Is there a different type of license to do this or any auctions where i dont need to have a dealer license that are open to the public. I live in Illinois.

I have found the best way to buy cars, weather at auction or otherwise is using money, preferably American currency. American currency is based on the “dollar,” and is the preferred method.

If you need a license to buy them, then what happens when you come to sell them?????
I am in the same position as you, but here I could only buy and sell 4 vehicles a year.
At one time I was selling 2 or 3 a month, if i had sold them without a second hand dealers license it could have cost me $5000 per car, in fines.
As the vehicles I was selling where all over 200,000kms and over 10 years old, they could be sold without warranty, or “as is, where is.”
Another advantage to holding a license is it allows you to buy from dealer only auctions, which is a lot cheaper than public auctions. As my business improved I moved away from buying and selling, you should do the same.
