Question by vixenbrunette: Can’t clear the title of a used car?
My dad bought me a used car last week at a dealers. I haven’t driven it yet because the title insn’t clear. The previous owner reported that his car was stolen, but the dealer said the gov. took the car because it the previous owner didn’t pay for it. So the dealer bought it in an auction, not knowing it was a reportedly “stolen” car. So, he’s willing to let us return the car, but I REALLY want it. Should I wait until the dealer can clear the title, which he has apparently been “trying” to do for the past week, or should I just return it?
Is it shady that the owner was quick to offer us a refund? And also, it’s been past a week, and he still hasen’t cleared the title.

I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole. It could take a long time to clear that title.

LOOK UP THE CARS HISTORY, USE THE VIN NUMBER.

I would take the car back. Like the others said, it can take a long time to straighten out a title issue. The reason the dealer will take it back is because they probably will send it back to the auction. But if they don’t, maybe if the dealer can get the title situation fixed then buy it.

Why would it be shady? Would you have said the same thing if he said “I owe you nothing”? Give the dealer some credit.
There should be a paper trail if it was repossessed instead of stolen. If the guy that claims the car was stolen from him is lying, a few phone calls and fax’s will uncover the truth VERY easily. However, if he’s right…give the car back to the dealer and let him find you another similar vehicle. They make more than one at a time.
